Most Marvel fans would know that Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff is long overdue. We were meant to see this right after she was introduced in Iron Man 2 way back in Phase 1, but due to other characters taking priority — Thor, Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Ant Man, Captain Marvel (coincidentally all male characters with the exception of Captain Marvel which also came very late, especially considering that it’s technically the “earliest” film in the entire timeline. Just putting this out there. Not insinuating anything else. Or am I?) — a Black Widow solo film just couldn’t be squeezed into the packed schedule.

Until after End Game. After she sacrificed herself and died. Bit late for a solo movie now isn’t it? What would be the point of a film about a character that is not going to any bearing on future Marvel movies? More importantly, what do I mean by you being able to catch Black Widow in your living room?? Patience my young Red Room Trainee. Let me first delve a little into what the movie is about.

What’s “Black Widow” Is About & Predictions

The Black Widow film takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War and sees Natasha heading back to Russia to reunite with her “family”, namely the Red Guardian, Melina Vostokoff, and Yelena Belova. I am not going to touch on each of these characters because they have been done to death by many other articles, but I will be explaining the importance of one of them later on. Why she heads back is not exactly known at the moment but I would venture that she was probably running away/hiding from General Ross who was tracking her down because she stood with Captain America against the government in Civil War. You still remember the Sokovia Accords yes? No? Catch up on what they are here

Although she does get to spend some quality time with la familia - catching up on gossip, exchanging stories, trading punches and kicks - a new villian swiftly draws Black Widow back into action. All but confirmed by virtually every fan as TaskMaster, this superbaddie has the ability to mimic the abilities of any person he sees in action, which makes fighting him a lot like fighting yourself. Perhaps a metaphor for Black Widow fighting against her own nature by joining S.H.I.E.L.D? Rumours abound that TaskMaster could actually be a SHE, with Melina as the prime “candidate”. The fact that till date there is no actor that has been officially credited with the role fuels the claim. After-all, if there is no new actor within the cast list and everyone else is already accounted for for a role, then TaskMaster has to be someone who already playing one of the known characters yes? Plus the fact that she technically harbours resentment towards Black Widow in the comics.

Vostokoff is a character who, like Natasha and Yelena, has been through the Red Room training. In the comics, she’s an older figure who resents Natasha’s effortless ability to perform the tasks her teachers demand. When their paths first cross in 1982’s Marvel Fanfare #11, she’s a villain with who Black Widow must face off.

Not to forget TaskMaster is also going to be introduced as the new in-charge for the Red Room, where Yelena, Natasha and Melina underwent training. If Yelena is going to take over the mantle of Black Widow, and Natasha is dead, then Melina is the only one left without a future secondary role. We can definitely rule out Alexei Shostakov a.k.a. Red Guardian because as you can see from the trailer, he is shown to be fighting TaskMaster in a few of the scenes.

Talking about the trailer, here is the latest one —

Obviously the identity of TaskMaster is just a theory for now but give me some props if it turns out correct. Another prediction — Red Guardian is probably not going to survive. We would have seen him in EndGame if he did. By that logic, Yelena would have been too but I am sure she would have reasons for missing that epic battle, reasons that are perhaps linked to Black Widow’s death. She is definitely taking over the mantle since Natasha’s death is irreversible — many conflicting theories on that, but with Scarlett Johanssan all contracted out from Marvel, chances of her taking up the role again is close to zilch — and without a doubt will be playing a integral part in Phase 4.

Black Widow On Disney+

If you have read my previous article about Unlocking HBO Max In Singapore, you would have known about the deal HBO have with Warner which basically means that almost all of Warner’s blockbusters would be simultaneously released on HBO Max and theatres on the same day. Though Hollywood has generally reacted quite negatively, Disney seems to be taken with the idea because…

Black Widow will be released on Disney+ on 9th July2021, the same day as the theatrical release!

With a caveat — it will probably cost around US$29.90 (SGD$40.23) to get Premier Access, which would then enable you to watch it at home. Yes, if you split that cost among all the friends, relatives, family members, pets (hey you never know!) that would be watching, the price doesn’t look so intimidating. Plus, you will get to re-watch it again, and again, and again, whenever and wherever you want! Or you could just go catch it in the cinema with your friends and wait for the movie to be released on Disney+ for free to re-watch it. You might have to wait 2 to 3 months, but eventually it’s going to join the rest of the Marvel movies that are already on the platform.

But if you are one of those who have to catch every single Marvel movie the moment it is released — like moi- then make sure you have 9th July hard stamped with a big spider mark because Black Widow is finally coming!
